What are stars?

a star is a big, bright ball of gas that's held together by gravity.l It's just like our sun, but a lot further away, in fact the closest star (apart from our sun) is Proxima Centauri which is 4.2 light years (4.0×1013 km)
A light year is the distance light travels in a year (around 10 trillion kilometres). Proxima Centauri is a dwarf star that was discovered in 1915 by Robert Innes.
why do stars shine?

Stars shine because they are hot. They're hot because there fusing hydrogen atoms together to make helium, which gives off loads of energy.
